Dr. Jacobs has been affiliated with ACH and UAMS since 1982. In September 2004, ACHRI welcomed Dr. Richard F. Jacobs as its President. Dr. Jacobs’ efforts are that of an advocate for ACHRI’s mission: To improve children’s health, development, and well-being through high quality research. He is accountable for the overall operation of ACHRI and all biomedical research on the ACH campus. In 2007, UAMS appointed Dr. Jacobs Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics. The department, which is the largest in the UAMS College of Medicine, is located on the ACH campus. Together, his two administrative roles allow an immediate consideration and efficient coordination of the goals and needs of ACH, ACHRI, and UAMS.
As ACHRI President, Dr. Jacobs is the liaison between ACHRI and the many colleges of UAMS as 98% of ACHRI researchers are UAMS faculty. Dr. Jacobs works in cooperation with the Director of the USDA-funded Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center to fulfill the goals and obligations put forth by that USDA program. Dr. Jacobs’ also promotes research in children so they can take advantage of the advances in research and medicine. He partners with various ACH administrators concerning various legislative, research, and philanthropic matters. Underlying all of Dr. Jacobs’ efforts is the infrastructure to promote basic, applied, clinical, and translational research. He helps ACHRI staff members provide the best services to encourage, facilitate, and maintain high quality research. He endeavors to make research support more time efficient, effective, and fun.
Dr. Jacobs is an infectious disease physician who sees pediatric patients in inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, he teaches third- and fourth-year medical students, residents, and physicians at UAMS. Dr. Jacobs participates in two NIH-funded clinical research projects: the antiviral study group and the pediatric pharmacology research unit network. In May 2008, ACH and UAMS held an investiture ceremony to name Dr. Jacobs as the inaugural recipient and steward of the Robert H. Fiser, Jr., MD Endowed Chair in Pediatrics.
