Marion B. Lyon New Scientist Development Award

Deadline: February 1 each year
Award Date: April 1 each year

Thanks to a generous gift from Mr. Frank Lyon, Jr., honoring his mother, Marion B. Lyon, Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute established the Marion B. Lyon New Scientist Development Award program to support a highly promising beginning scientist in his or her efforts to become an independent investigator. The funding period is for two years from the award date.

Eligibility: MD, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree earned at application time. Applicants should be full-time faculty/staff member based on the Arkansas Children's Hospital campus and initiating independent research careers, usually at the rank of Instructor or Assistant Professor (or their equivalents). At the time the Scientist Development Award is activated an applicant must not hold or have held any of the following awards: NIH R01, NIH Physician Scientist Award, NIH Independent Scientist Award, NIH Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award, or NIH FIRST award. The applicant must demonstrate that the institution supports their efforts to become an independent scientist.

Award Amount: $50,000 for the entire two year period to cover investigator salary, fringe benefits and other project support.

Report of Project Results: Investigators must report the results of their research project to the ACHRI Research Council within two years after the award is made.

Peer Review Criteria: To meet the desires of the Lyon Trust, ACHRI will assemble a peer review committee to review the applications for scientific merit. The peer review committee will send the best two applications to the ACHRI President for a final decision, then to the ACHRI Board for final funding approval. The peer review committee and the ACHRI President will base decisions on the following criteria:

1. Demonstrated evidence that the award will promote independent status for the applicant (based upon letter from department chair)

2. Scientific merit of the research proposal, including originality of ideas, soundness of approach, and logical organization

3. Qualifications of the applicant, including appropriate professional career stage; relevant experience; productivity in previous training and research; current relationship to supervisor/mentor; prior awards, if any, and resulting accomplishment; number and quality of publications in peer reviewed journals (some of the above based upon department chair's letter and Reference Reports)

4. Adequacy of available resources, including consultative support, and facilities; institutional commitment. Institutional commitment should be included in the letter from the department chair in support of the percent effort devoted to the proposed project.

Application Materials: Applicants will use the CUMG grant application materials and instructions. However, unlike CUMG, applicants will

  1. Describe their research plan in 15 pages or less instead of 5 as it states for CUMG submissions,
  2. Include a letter from the department chair supporting the overall commitment of time, promoting the independent status of the applicant, and verifying the applicant's qualifications and status;
  3. Provide only three copies of the application packet instead of the 10 as requested for the CUMG, and
  4. Omit the following forms that are required for the CUMG: Faculty Support Form, Justification for Multiple CUMG Award Form, and Productivity Report Form.
