Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation

Summary:      The Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation is focused on finding a cure for spinal cord injury and improving the quality of life for people living with paralysis.

More Info:     The Foundation's Individual Research Grants Program supports a variety of investigator-initiated research, including axon growth and guidance, remyelination, cellular replacement, rehabilitation and neuroprotection.

The Foundation's Quality of Life Grants fund programs and projects that improve the daily lives of people with paralysis, with some emphasis on, but not limited to, paralysis caused by spinal cord injuries.

Funding:        In 2008 the Foundation gave $8,602,028 for 119 grants (high: $1,525,999; low: $5,388). Quality of Life Grants are for up to $25,000.

Summary:      The Craig H. Neilson Foundation provides support for spinal cord injury (SCI) research and rehabilitation.
More Info:     The Foundation supports basic and clinical research aimed at developing cures for SCI and provides post-doctoral fellowships through Research Grants. The Foundation also supports innovative programs that improve the quality of life for those who have been paralyzed by a spinal cord injury through Opportunity Grants.

CVS Caremark Charitable Trust

Summary:      CVS Caremark's primary focus is helping to make life easier for children with disabilities. The company provides grants through its foundation, the CVS Caremark Charitable Trust, and through Community Grants. The Charitable Trust and Community Grants are partners in the company's CVS Caremark All Kids Can™ program.

More Info:     In addition to funding programs that build skills, capabilities and create opportunities for success for children with disabilities, the Charitable Trust also funds organizations that are dedicated to improving the quality of health and well-being of populations most difficult to reach including uninsured or underserved youth and children. The Trust is particularly interested in programs that seek to provide a medical home for underserved populations and screening, health promotion and prevention efforts.

Funding:        In 2008 the Charitable Trust gave $4,789,359 for 543 grants (high:$500,000; low: $500). Charitable Trust grants range from $10,000 to $50,000 for one-year support. Community Grants are for up to $5,000.

Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation

Summary:      The mission of the Dorothea Haus Ross Foundation is to advance the well being of children; to aid and assist in providing the basic needs of food, shelter, health and education to such children, and to relieve the suffering of children with mental and physical handicaps.

More Info:     The Foundation's primary funding interest is to relieve suffering among children who are sick, handicapped, injured, disfigured, orphaned or otherwise vulnerable. The Foundation makes grants in the following categories: equipment/supplies, emergency, small construction, renovations and building purchase, start-up expenses, and specific project support. The Foundation also participates in matching or challenge grants.

Funding:        In 2009 the Foundation made 37 grants totaling $435,960. Most Foundation grants are one-time awards in the range of $1,000 to $15,000.

Hearst Foundations

Summary:      The Hearst Foundations support organizations that address issues in the areas of health, education, social service, and culture and that primarily serve large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. The Foundations generally provide endowment, program, and capital grant support.
More Info:     The Foundations' grants are awarded to children's and women's hospitals, regional hospitals, and medical centers. The Foundations support direct medical services that promote wellness, prevention, and rehabilitation. Primary areas of interest include pediatrics, cancer, and the disabled. The Foundation also supports advanced professional education and training in their primary areas of interest.
Funding:        In 2009 the Foundation gave $25,830,000 for 242 grants.

Summary:      Milbank Foundation for Rehabilitation was created to pursue Jeremiah Milbank’s vision of integrating people with disabilities into all aspects of American life.

Summary:      The Mitsubishi Electric America Foundation's mission is to help young people with disabilities to lead full and productive lives.


More Info:     The Foundation supports organizations and projects within its mission that address important needs, have broad scope and impact, and demonstrate potential for replication at other sites. A major program emphasis is inclusion: enabling young people with disabilities to have full access to educational, vocational and recreational opportunities and to participate alongside their non-disabled peers.

Funding:        In 2008 the Foundation gave $572,913 for 164 grants (high: $55,000; low: $25).

Eligibility:       Non-profit organizations. Grant recipients include: (1) Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, for support in the development and dissemination of a training program, using handheld computers, aimed at increasing the independence and employment of youth with cognitive disabilities, and (2) Children's Hospital Boston, for a program to train young people with disabilities to serve as volunteers rather than being the object of volunteer efforts by others.

National Inclusion Project

Summary:      The National Inclusion Project supports communities and programs in creating awareness and opportunities for full inclusion of young people with special needs.

More Info:     The National Inclusion Project seeks to partner with programs that are looking to do one or more of the following: (1) Implement Let’s ALL Play; (2) Implement Together We Make a Difference; (3) Utilize the National Inclusion Project’s training module to increase their staff’s capability to serve children with disabilities successfully in an inclusive setting; and, (4) Provide scholarships for children with disabilities who otherwise could not participate due to financial need.

Funding:        Let’s ALL Play and Together We Make a Difference:  $20,000 per year for a project period of up to 12 months; Financial assistance for child participation: $1,000 per year for up to 12 months; and Continuing education programs/symposia: $10,000 per program/symposia. In 2008 the Project gave $407,306 for 32 grants (high: $20,000; low: $5,040).

Summary:      The Verizon Foundation provides support for programs that address technology for healthcare and healthcare accessibility.

More Info:     The Foundation invests in projects that provide technology to help underserved populations and people with disabilities access information on critical health issues. They also support innovative technology that helps healthcare providers increase their efficiency, effectiveness and reach.

Funding:        The average grant size has ranged between $5,000 and $10,000. In 2008 the Foundation gave $56,953,706 for 17,417 grants.
