CUMG Instructions

An Overview of the CUMG Award Application Process

The Application Process:

The original and 10 copies of the grant application along with a scanned CD or Word copy of your submission should be submitted to Amy Stalls, Research Administration Office, ACHRI-Slot 842. Upon receipt, applications will be reviewed and forwarded to the Review Committee for evaluation. The applications will be evaluated and scored on the basis of scientific merit. Well-written, concise proposals that clearly describe the experimental design and methodology and present a clear plan to meet the category requirements are more likely to be favorably considered.

The Application Packet:

Applicants will submit an application packet containing the following:

1. Review Committee/Timeline Letter

2. Main Application Form

3. Signed ACHRI Checklist

4. Detailed Budget Form/Justification Budget Forms

5. Other Support Form(s)

6. Biographical Sketch/Continuation Page Form

7. Research Plan

8. Faculty Support Form (for Category C, Resident or Fellow applicants only)

9. Justification for multiple CUMG awards (current CUMG grantees only)

10. Productivity Report (For applicants who have completed CUMG-funded projects)

11. Study Summary Form (For applicants whose proposals involve Human Subjects Clinical Trials only. Contact Janet Storment at 364-2760 to obtain the form and help with pricing.)

The Routing Process:

You must route your application for the appropriate departmental signatures. This process ensures both budget accuracy (especially pertaining to salaries) and departmental support for your budget. Begin routing 10 business days before the deadline date. You do not have to route your entire application, but you must include the main application form, the finalized budget, and a summary of the project.

Download forms with each new CUMG submission rather than saving them to your computer and reusing them in future submissions; updates are occasionally made to the forms. Links to the forms and detailed instructions are provided below.

Detailed Instructions for completing the CUMG Application Packet:

1. Review Committee/Timeline Letter

There is no form for this section. A letter outlining the study timeline is required for all CUMG applicants and should be addressed to the CUMG Review Committee. Please include the following information in the letter:

For categories A and B, include details about your plans to submit for extramural funding within the specified timeframe (12 months for category A, 24 months for category B).

Include details regarding your plans to submit a proposal for extramural funding (this includes the name of the prospective funding agency and any previous review scores that might demonstrate the likelihood of your receiving an award).

2. Main Application Form

This form is required for all CUMG applicants. Below are instructions for completing each item on the form.

Section A

Items 1 & 2: Self-explanatory.

Item 3: Select Item A - CUMG and then select the appropriate category for your proposal for the drop down box. If you have questions as to which category best fits your proposal, please contact Amy Stalls (phone: 364-3627).

Item 4: Protocols for proposals using animals must be approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee prior to award. Protocols for proposals using human subjects or recombinant DNA must also be approved by the Human Research Advisory Committee or the Biohazard Committee prior to award.

Item 5: Requests should be reasonable, well justified and limited to a maximum of $40,000. Please limit your request to the minimum amount required to effectively carry out your study. There are no indirect cost to be included in the budget.

Section B

Item 6: Applicants are welcome to resubmit CUMG applications that were "Approved without Funding" during previous review cycles. The reviewer comments, score and priority score from the previous cycle will be distributed to the most current review committee members. However, no special consideration regarding the past priority score will be given to resubmitted applications.

Item 7: If you have a completed CUMG-funded project, ACHRI will print your final progress report for you and attach it to your application. If you have a currently active CUMG-funded project, contact ACHRI to obtain a waiver to apply for multiple active CUMG grants.

Item 8: A Study Design and Statistical Review must occur before submission of the application. It may be performed by a fellow investigator, mentor, collaborator, or biostatistician (e.g., biostatistician from the Department of Pediatrics Statistics Section). Indicate that you received a Study Design and Statistical Review. The reviewer must sign the application.

Section C - Skip Section C

Section D

Item 12: Self Explanatory.

Item 13: Section Chief's signature verifies that any budget overruns will be assumed by the Section.

3. Signed ACHRI Checklist

This form is required for all CUMG applicants.

4. Detailed Budget Form/Justification Budget Forms

This form is required for all RDF applicants. Below are instructions for completing this form.

Using the space provided, list all budget items. Sufficient justification must be provided for the dollars requested in each category. If more space is required, copy the Justification form. Any itemization must equal the total dollars requested for that category. Salary and fringe benefits for any U of A faculty member will NOT be supported with these funds. Travel is not normally allowed.

5. Other Support Form(s)

This form is required for all applicants. List all active and pending grant support. For each grant, list the funding source or agency, the title, total amount of the award, the percent effort, the funding period, current year's budget and describe the relationship to the current application, especially any overlap. List the status of pending applications if known. Use a separate form for each pending or awarded grant/contract.

6. Biographical Sketch/Continuation Page Form Submit a current biographical sketch.

7. Research Plan

There is no form for this section. Please use a Microsoft Word format. The body of your Research Plan must not exceed five single spaced pages (not including references). References should be limited to 2 pages. Please use the following format for the body of your research plan.

I. Abstract/Summary

II. Specific Aims

III. Background and Significance

IV. Experimental Design and Method

V. Statistical Plan

8. Faculty Support Form (for Category C, Resident or Fellow applicants only)

This form is required for Resident or Fellow applicants only. Category C is open to residents and fellows. Any resident or fellow applying for this award must apply with a faculty member. Faculty members partnering with residents or fellows will assume responsibility for stewardship of funds and program compliance. Along with this form, submit a letter of support from the sponsoring faculty member.

9. Justification for multiple CUMG awards (current CUMG grantees only)

Typically, investigators will only be eligible to hold one CUMG award at any one time. Exceptions are occasionally made for applicants who currently hold active CUMG grant awards, who show productivity with the current award, and provide justification for a concurrent application.  Investigators seeking a waiver to apply for a concurrent CUMG award must inquire with the President of ACHRI (UAMS/COM Associate Dean of Research at ACHRI) prior to the application deadline.  If you are granted a waiver to apply for a concurrent CUMG award, please complete this form stating your justification for the waiver. Include the completed form in your application packet so that it can be shared with the review group for that funding cycle.

10. RDF Productivity Report (for applicants who have completed RDF funded projects)

If you have any completed CUMG-funded projects, this report is printed for you by ACHRI. It will be added to your application packet to be distributed to the review committee. You will have the opportunity to review and approve the report before it is submitted to the review committee with your application. It will include information about your completed CUMG-funded projects. To ensure that we have the most current information regarding extramural funding, publications, etc., related to your completed CUMG-funded research, call or email - Amy Stalls (phone: 364-3627).
