Research Overview

Dr. Tuzcu is a pediatric cardiologist and Arkansas’ only pediatric electrophysiologist. He has recently developed a technique for performing heart catheterization procedures on children without the need for X-ray or fluoroscopy. His new technique, using a computerized three dimensional mapping system, is so precise that the use of real-time X-ray imaging to visually navigate the catheter through the heart is not necessary in most cases. He also uses cryoablation to freeze the abnormal cells in the heart. Dr. Tuzcu has been one of the pioneers of the safe cryoablation technique, and unlike most other centers, now the outcome of cryoablation procedures is very close to that of radiofrequency ablation, a technique where certain worrisome complications can occur. Not requiring X-ray while being able to do that is another significant advantage. Exposure to X-ray poses a threat to anyone, especially children, who are particularly susceptible and may experience negative health effects such as cancer or having children with birth defects, later in life. Dr. Tuzcu is increasingly using cryoablation for his patients. Its main advantage he notes is the reduction of complications that can occur with burning cardiac cells. He shares his knowledge and understanding of cryoablation with other physicians through demonstrations, publications, and presentations.
