Research OverviewDr. Schmitz’ key research interests involve innovative modalities of pediatric pain management and devices for peripheral vein imaging. Currently he is conducting studies of new formulations and combinations of pain drugs including topical analgesics. Dr. Schmitz is also involved in evaluating new devices for pain control or treatment in children. These systems include propelling powdered lidocaine crystals with compressed helium into the skin. Other devices he evaluates involve imaging of peripheral veins in children. These devices use infrared lighting to illuminate veins and then display the images digitally in real time. Dr. Schmitz also collaborates with his colleagues at Arkansas Children’s Hospital in other studies regarding pediatric anesthesiology.
