Research Overview

With nearly two decades of experience as a Registered Dietitian, Dr. Gilchrist has clinical and research expertise in all components of energy balance, including metabolism, dietary assessment, hands-on physical assessment, body composition analysis, and physical activity monitoring. Her past research efforts have focused on prevention of obesity among vulnerable populations, including older adults and breast cancer survivors. Current research interests focus on obesity prevention among children. In the USDA-funded longitudinal Beginnings cohort study, she is evaluating the effects of type of early infant feeding and introduction of starter foods on growth and body composition. As this cohort is followed prospectively, Dr. Gilchrist will have the opportunity to relate early growth and body composition with risk of overweight and obesity among school children. Other research efforts in her laboratory include developing improved methodologies and normative reference data for body composition (%fat) among infants, toddlers, and preschool children.
