ACHRI Mock Trial 2007

A Special Grand Rounds Presentation of:

A Day in Court: A Clinical Research Mock Trial

On June 18, 2007 the Arkansas Children's Hospital Research Institute (ACHRI) Human Protections Area held a Mock Trial in the Chairman's Hall of the Arkansas Children's Hospital (ACH). The trial was a fictional study based on a real-life case recently settled. It demonstrated core issues in human subjects research while helping researchers, research staff, research administrators, and residents recognize and address the challenging and sometimes controversial aspects of a clinical trial.

The audience members were given player summaries before the trial describing each player and their motivation.

A jury was chosen from volunteers before the trial.

The trial began with an introduction from the event director Margie Brackeen, Regulatory Compliance Specialist for ACHRI followed by a presentation by the "judge" Robert Steinbuch, Esq. of the UALR Bowen School of Law describing the legal process and the issues involved in a civil trial of this type.

The jury members were excused to deliberate in
another room, and their deliberations were web-
cast back into the main auditorium so that the
participants could listen to their discussions.

After one hour of deliberation, the jury returned
a verdict for the defendants and awarded
nothing to the plaintiff. Would you agree
with this verdict?
