WHO MAY SERVE AS A PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR?
 
Q. Who can be a Principal Investigator (PI) on the ACHRI campus?
 
A. There are strict guidlines concerning who can and cannot be a principal investigator on the ACHRI campus. See Section 2.0 and 2.1 of the Guidebook for a full description.
 
 
 
FUNDING SOURCES AND THE PRE-AWARD OFFICE
 
Q. I would like to know if there are any clinical trials in my project areas and how I could become a part of one. Who do I contact for information and to get started?
 
A. For information on finding a clinical trial contact Janet Storment the Clinical Trials Administrator. Janet can help you find companies who have clinical trials matching your subject area.
 
 
 
PROPOSAL PREPARATION
 

Q. I don't know how to begin writing a research project. I don't even know how to write a hypothesis that has an impact.

 
A. Make an appointment to see our grant writers, Phaedra Yount or John Gregan! They would be very happy to help you begin your project plans.
 
 
 
BUDGET DEVELOPMENT
 
Q. I want to work with a colleague at another institution. I will need to pay him/her for their help on my project, how do I get them paid?
 
A. You may need to create a subcontract. You can get help with this process from Lee Smith in Research Administration.
He can help you with write this into your budget and facilitate negotiations with the partner institution.
 
Q. I am working on a project involving human subjects. How do I know what costs are involved and how to write this into my proposal?
 
A. Janet Storment can help you with any human subject cost questions. She can also help with any charges from the pharmacy and PCRU.
 
Q. I would like to include animals in my research project. How do I write this into my proposal and where do I get the costs for this?
 
A. Please contact Blake Harrison to determine the costs for animal purchase, perdiem, and space available.
 
 
 
SUBMITTING A PROPOSAL
 
Q. Who can help me submit my proposal to NIH?
 
A. Lee Smith in the Pre-Award office can help you with all of your pre-award needs including submission.
 
Q. How close to the grant deadline do I need to have my proposal to the pre-award office?
 
A. You need to have your routed, completed proposal ready to be submitted to the pre-award office no later than 24- hours before the deadline. If you have any questions or need special help, feel free to contact Lee Smith.
 
 
 
AWARD ANNOUNCEMENT
 
Q. My study involves looking at patient charts and possibly contacting them but I am not sure if it needs IRB approval. How to I determine if my study needs to be approved by the IRB?
 
A. When in doubt, submit your protocol to the IRB. They are the only ones who can decide if your study requires approval or not. You can contact the IRB through their website: http://www.uams.edu/irb/IRB.asp
 
Q. Are there any requirements I must complete before submitting to the IRB?
 
A. You must complete the IRB Training Course at www.citiprogram.org. Affiliate with both ACHRI and UAMS. You will need to receive 100% on each test to pass. Once you have completed these successfully, you will need to apply for an ARIA ID and Password. This process is outlined on the IRB website: http://www.uams.edu/irb/IRB.asp
 
 
SETTING UP A NEW PROJECT ACCOUNT
 
Q. Who do I contact to get my account set up for my project expenses?
 
A. You will contact Leslie Montgomery. She will be able to open your account after the sponsor grants an award; the terms and conditions are accepted and approved by both the authorized representative of ACHRI, UAMS, and the PI; and the IRB and IACUC have been cleared
 
 
 
PROJECT MANAGEMENT
 
Q. I know my grant has been funded but the funds have not arrived at ACHRI yet. Is it possible to begin spending before the funds arrive?
 
A. If you need to spend within the ninety (90) days preceding the award start date, you can complete an advance account setup form for pre-award spending and submit it to the ACHRI Pre-award office. The sponsoring agency will be contacted to verify that the funds will be coming and, if approved by all of the parties on the setup form, an ACHRI account number will be assigned. However, if funding does not prevail, the PI and Department will be responsible for all expenses posted to the grant.

Q. I think my new process might be right for a business start-up. Is there anyone I can discuss this with?
